Body and Embodiment in Virtual Reality
Art – Practice – Technology
Our virtual XR Art & Networking event on June 03/04, 2021 is an info and networking event for art and culture professionals of the independent scene on the topic of the current OPEN CALL in combination with a practice-oriented workshop via ZOOM.
But what is embodiment? What role does it play in art and computer science? And through which tools can embodiment be created – what, on the other hand, leads to disembodiment?
We would like to discuss questions like these in depth with you in the following two formats:
XR/T/alks | 03.06.2021 | 6–7:30 p.m.
In this ZOOM format we offer you an introduction to the concept of embodiment in art and computer science by Maja Stark, followed by two impulses from VR specialists:
Dancer and choreographer Carly Lave explores the question of how dance enters the virtual world via embodiment and reports on the limits and possibilities of the motion capturing tool.
Prof. Melissa de Raaf from the Kunsthochschule für Medien (KHM) Cologne, who studied philosophy and art history, will critically examine Virtual Reality with regard to the technology’s popular potential for generating empathy.
The language will be English.

XR-Workshop | 04.06.2021 | 10 a.m.– 11.30 p.m. and 3–5 p.m.
In this ZOOM workshop, you will get the opportunity to borrow a VR headmounted display and immerse yourself in The Swan Collective’s artistic VR work Here we are – A Touring Torture (2018), in which embodiment plays an essential role. The instruction, the technical support and our exchange about the artwork will run via ZOOM.
At 3 p.m. there will be a technical input on VR and embodiment by our computer scientist Christoph Holtmann, an input by Elle Langer about Storytelling in XR and the possibility to present your own ideas, to discuss and to network in the field of XR, art and culture!
The language of the workshop will be German, but we can also switch to English for your questions and the discussion.
Please note: Due to funding from the European Regional Development Fund and the limited number of participants, the ZOOM workshop on 04.06.21 focusses on arts and culture professionals living in Berlin.
